The Iconography Process

Embark on a spiritual journey with Joe Vella as we unveil the meticulous and sacred process behind each Holy Icon. Discover the blend of ancient tradition, personal devotion, and artistic mastery that brings these divine images to life.

A Sacred Beginning

Our iconography process is deeply rooted in devotion and traditional Byzantine canons. It is a lengthy journey involving various stages, underscored by prayer, fasting, and meditation. This spiritual preparation ensures that each icon is not merely a painting, but a conduit for divine connection. An Icon is a window to Heaven

Materials and Techniques

I adhere strictly to traditional Byzantine rules. The foundation begins with a carefully prepared wooden board, sealed with rabbit skin glue and layered with multiple layers of gesso. After sanding to a perfectly smooth surface, I  then apply bole for the gilding. Again after sanding so that the surface is shining. Then gold is applied  twice so as to have a shining result. Then the design is drawn and then start painting with egg tempera. The colours are derived from natural pigments bound with egg yolk and alcohol. Our gold leaf is a double thickness of 23.75 karat. The icon is meticulously 'written' starting with the darkest hues and gradually building up lighter layers, culminating in a final protective varnish.

The Spiritual Influence

The spiritual aspect is paramount. As a form of sacred art, each icon is created with mindful prayer, fasting, and meditation. It is also essential to keep in mind the individual who has commissioned the icon. Once blessed by a priest, the completed icon transcends art to become a Holy Image, imbued with spiritual significance.

"The reverence and dedication in Joe's work are palpable. Each icon is a testament to faith and tradition."
